Acetylcholine -  Biochemical substance; a neurotransmitter that promotes the propagation of electrical
impulses from one nerve cell to another in carbon based life.
When the crew of Enterprise is possessed by Wisp-like aliens, the possessed state is characterised
by elevated acetylcholine levels in the autonomic nervous system.
                                                               "The Crossing" [ENT]
Spock performed an acetylcholine test on a huge spaceborne amoeba creature that destroyed the

Dr. Bashir was studying the neuromuscular adaptation theory by Nathaniel Teros by using a computer
model of an elevated neural output from the brain's gross motor cortex... it stimulated acetylcholine
absorption to increase tensile strength.    "Melora" [DS9]
It is common to the neural structures of most humanoids; the Doctor says that the clamp stimulated
the production of acetylcholine in the hypothalmus in order to stimulate aggressive tendencies.

super-weapon Prototype's "activation codes".  Archer used them to detonate the weapon in order to
keep the Andorians from stealing it.    "Proving Ground" [ENT]

Adaptive syntax - This means that the way in which words are put together to form phrases or sentences
can change.  The way words are put together can be modified or "adapted" to make the language fit

Adrenal gland - The endocrine organs that produce adrenalin (epinephrine) in humans.  They also
produce many other biochemical substances (norepinephrine, and steroids). Nausicaan adrenal glands
produce a unique odor.   "Adrenal" can mean "near the kidneys", so it is not known whether the Nausicaan
glands produce biochemicals similar to the human ones or just that they are located near the kidneys.

Agony Booth - Torture device used in the Mirror Universe.  It was invented by Mirror-Phlox and
Mirror-Reed.  It's first tested on a Tellarite crew member.  Its operating principle is that it scans
the subject, continually shifting stimulation to fresh nerve clusters, so as not to overload them.
                                                              "In a Mirror Darkly" [ENT]

Agosoria, Great Plume of - The name applied by the pilgrim-celebrants to the (visible) neutron burst
emitted every 11 years by a particular protostar in a stellar nursery-nebula.   Several
worlds (and species) are represented among the celebrants, including one man in purple
Bajoran-like robes.  A traditional greeting during this time is "may Agosoria embrace
you into his renewal".  Another is: "Roja durana tua teenan" ("may the plume light
your way").  To them the plume symbolizes a Hindu-like universal cycle of renewal.
Archer was presented with two gifts on this occasion, a "clock" that "charts time from
the beginning of the universe" and a bottle of "Voo-Sinteel".

Airlock - A passage or chamber with variable pressure, which allows access between two areas with
different environmental conditions, without compromising the integrity of either. Air locks are often
used to allow personnel to move safely from an area, such as the interior of a spacecraft or spacestation,
where an atmosphere is maintained, into an area where there is a vacuum, or where a different atmosphere
exists without having to decompress large parts of the vessel. Typically, airlocks are used by crew,
wearing spacesuits, to exit a vehicle into the vacuum of space.  Air locks can sometimes be used to
quarantine personnel or objects.  They are also used as passageways to docked spacecraft.
There is a small airlock at the top of the shuttlepods.

Archer, Henry (Mark Moses) - The principal designer of Enterprise's engines.  He was part of
Doctor Cochrane's team to develop the Warp 5 engine.  However, he died before
he could see the ship launch under his son's ( Johnathan Archer's ) command in 2151.
                                             "Broken Bow" [ENT]
His son, Jonathan was chosen to write the preface to Henry's bibliography.
                                        "Singularity" [ENT]
He suffered from Clarke's Disease.  His final years were marked with
    extreme pain.
                                        "Borderland" [ENT]
He was a friend of Emory Erickson, the inventor of the transporter.
                                        "Daedalus" [ENT]

Archer, Jonathan (Scott Bakula, Young Archer was played by Matt Davis) - SEE:  Archer

Archer, Karyn - First officer of the alternate E2-Enterprise.  Most of her anscestors were human but
there were also chromosomes from three different species Phlox didn't recognize.  She was the
E2-Jonathan Archer's great grand daughter.  Her great grandmother, Archer's wife, was Esilia, an
    Ikaaran.                                                "E2" [ENT]

Archer IV - Originally, an unnamed MinShara class planet with two moons.  There were no marker-
buoys, beacons, or manmade satellites within Enterprise's scanner range.
                                           "Strange New World" [ENT]
It was the first M-class planet Enterprise found.
                                          "Home" [ENT]
Location:  As viewed from Earth, it is just to the left of Polaris.
                                          "Home" [ENT]
Shortly after disembarking from their shuttle, Archer comments
on their 3 weeks in deep space to get there.  Later, Trip, during his
hallucination-induced paranoia refered to being 6 weeks into their mission.
                                                               "Strange New World" [ENT]
Atmosphere: 17% oxygen, 81% nitrogen, With her scanner, T'Pol identifies
"trace elements" of Nitrogen Dioxide (no such chemical compound really
exists) and Chloromethane.  High winds can get up to around 80kph.
                                                               "Strange New World" [ENT]
Geography: Archer decides to land in the Northern continent because he “likes the looks of it.”  There
are mountains to the southwest of the landing area where plants with hallucinogenic spores grow.
There are caves less than half a kilometer from the landing site with cave walls composed of
limestone and cormaline.                "Strange New World" [ENT]
There was a mountain range on the Southern Continent with an amazing view.
                                                                "Home" [ENT]
Flora and Fauna: A diverse ecology with no sign of humanoid life.  The planet also has a diverse
insect population, including some that glow like fireflies.  Cutler scans small fishlike creatures in a
river.  The landing party detected nocturnal marsupials.  Flowering plants produce tropolisine and
a toxin which is activated when stray neutrons in the tropolisine decay.  This powerful hallucinogen
is released into the air during high winds on the planet.
                                                               "Strange New World" [ENT]

Archer IV is one of two planets named after Jonathan Archer and was the first M-Class world charted
by the famous explorer. Although the planet was uninhabitable throughout the 22nd Century due to
toxic pollen in the atmosphere, an antidote to the pollen was discovered early in the 2200s. Today,
the population of Archer IV numbers more than seven hundred million.

Archer IV was the destination of the Enterprise-D before its encounter with the time rift caused by the
Enterprise-C in an alternate timeline.  In that timeline, Archer IV was where the Klingons suffered
a defeat against the Federation.           "Yesterday's Enterprise" [TNG]

Archer's comet - Enterprise discovers a nearby comet -- 82.6 km in diameter.  T'Pol rejects the
notion that they investigate, as humans and Vulcans have explored hundreds; but
Archer points out that it's the biggest comet ever seen by humans.  It could
very well be the biggest ever seen by Vulcans also.  It was named "Archer's
comet" by Mayweather.  The comet contained large deposits of eisilium
embedded under a layer of magnesite.  They can't beam a sample of it up,
because the deposits are more than 20-m deep.  Reed and Mayweather took a drilling rig to the comet
to gather some of the rare material.  When they blew a hole in the surface, the comet's axis shifted.
                                                               "Breaking the Ice" [ENT]
Adm.Forrest refers to scans of "that comet" (presumably the one seen in "Breaking the Ice")
                                                              "Fortunate Son" [ENT]

Archie, Uncle -  Uncle of Malcolm Reed who was contacted by Hoshi Sato to find Malcolm's favorite
type of food.                                      "Silent Enemy" [ENT]

Arctic Circle -  Northern polar region on Earth.  In 2063, debris from a Borg ship landed in the Arctic Circle.
90 years later, a team of excavationists found the debris there.
                                                                "Regeneration" [ENT]

Arctic transport -  Ship used by the A-6 excavation team in their study of Borg debris in the Arctic Circle.
After the team was assimilated, the Borg began upgrading the ships systems.  The standard capability
of the ship was warp 1.4, but the ship was seen leaving Earth at warp 3.9.  The ship attacked a
Tarkalean freighter and was intercepted by the Enterprise.  The attack was halted and the transport
continued on its course.  Enterprise pursued the ship and destroyed it just after it relayed a message to
    the Delta Quadrant.                              "Regeneration" [ENT]

Ardanan -  Relays onboard a Retellian cargo vessel were taken from an old Ardanan shuttle.   They were jury-
rigged to regulate power flow to a biopod, but they weren't designed to handle that much current.
                                                                 "Precious Cargo" [ENT]

Argon lamp - A light-producing device that increases argon levels in an atmosphere.  Doctor Phlox used an argon lamp
in an unsuccessful attempt to make a suitable environment for Sluggo.
                                                               "Fight or Flight" [ENT]

Arkonians - SEE: Alien Races - Arkonians.

Arming torpedos - SEE: torpedo.

Armory -  SEE:  Armory.

Armstrong, Neil -  First man on the moon.
                                                                "First Flight" [ENT]

Asahf  (Victor Talmadge) -  Crewmember on a ship that abandoned the Rha'Duras Protectorate.  He was
one of 27 survivors out of the 54 that left.
                                                                "Judgment" [ENT]

Asteroid field - After 3 days, Reed and Tucker in a shuttlepod return to the Enterprise early to an asteroid-
field consisting of 2 primaries and 17 planetesimals.  The early return was due to damage to communications
and the sensor array.  There seems to be quite a number of microsingularities in the area of the asteroid field.
(One wonders if that isn't the reason why it is an asteroid field in the first place.)
                                                           "Shuttlepod One" [ENT]

Astrometric computer-  A powerful processing unit located in San Francisco.  Sub-Commander T'Pol felt that
the astrometric computer was better able to track Suliban ships than the equipment aboard Enterprise.  She
recommended that Captain Archer abort their mission to Qo'noS in 2151.
                                                               "Broken Bow" [ENT]

Astrometrics - T'pol comments that "Astrometrics" detected what could be "micro-singularities" in the
asteroid field; unusual charged particles were detected as the Tesnian ship docked.
                                                              "Shuttlepod One" [ENT]

Astronaut - A space traveller, typically from a non-warp culture;  The Enterprise encountered a ship containing
two Valakian astronauts a little less than 1 lightyear from their world.
                                                               "Dear Doctor" [ENT]

Athan - SEE: Novan Individuals, Athan.

Atmospheric Recycling Manifold - Located at Junction 41-alpha.  The control panel is inside the rightmost
of a series of vertical bulkhead panels.  It has four releases - two of them blue (upper row) and two silver
(lower row).  The panel is removed by pressing the two silver ones first, then the other two.  The control
panel has six green lights, each with a switch about 5 cm to the left of it.  The switches control the feed of
gas to central ventillation.  To reroute the transfer lines to the CO2 tanks, for example, the switches have to
be "recalibrated" in sequence for CO2.
                                                                "The Crossing" [ENT]

Augment - A genetically-engineered human who was a product of the Eugenics experiments of the 1990's.
                                                                "Borderland" [ENT]
They originally had double the heart-valve action, 50% better lung efficiency, and 5 times the strength
of an ordinary human.                      "Space Seed" [ENT]
Soong stole 19 genetically-engineered embryos and made some improvements of his own to the genetic
coding.  Soong's augments also had 5 times the strength, and they had double the intelligence of an
ordinary human.  Some of their names were Raakin, Malik, Persis, Saul, and Jaya.
                                                                 "Borderland" [ENT]

Austin - MACO.  Initial is H. or M.  Gets gunged by a Xindi-Insectoid.  Bears a distinct resemblance
    to corporal Kelly.
                                          "Rajiin" [ENT]

Autonomic system - A system that regulates involuntary action.  Klaang's autonomic system was
disrupted by the blast from Moore's plasma rifle in 2151.  If not for his redundant neural functions
he would have died.                            "Broken Bow" [ENT]

Autopilot - Tucker successfully tested some autopilot upgrades to the shuttlepod near a gas giant
which had 62 moons...  He described it as a gravitational jigsaw puzzle and the perfect spot
to test the modifications.  In fact, they worked so well, he remarked that pretty soon pilots wouldn't
be needed anymore.  He was proven wrong when an Arkonian shot at him and disabled the autopilot
forcing him to make a manual landing.  "Dawn" [ENT]

Autosequencer - SEE: Transporter System, Autosequencer.

Auto-suture - An expensive piece of medical equipment that Dr. Phlox offered to the woman from the
deuterium facility in place of an osmotic eel.
                                                                "Marauders" [ENT]
Phlox used an auto-suture (a yellow one) during the operation to transplant a new pituitary gland into
Porthos.                                              "A Night in Sickbay" [ENT]

Auxiliary landing thrusters - The shuttlepod's auxiliary landing thrusters were damaged making it
impossible to land.                             "Strange New World" [ENT]

Auxiliary power - An emergency power system aboard Enterprise, activated when main power fails.
When the Suliban cut off all power and boarded his ship Archer remarked "auxiliary power should have
kicked in by now."                              "Broken Bow" [ENT]

Axanar - SEE:  Axanar

Azati Prime - Red giant system where the Xindi super-weapon is being built.  The "military habitat"
located near there with Degra's wife and family is a "bleak, desolate, and barely inhabitable" site for
a colony.  Yet over a thousand Primates and "Arboreals" live at the classified installation.  Its
coordinates are "1127.4 by 4052 by 3901.1," (which would take ENT three weeks at max warp. to
get to from the Calindra system).         "Strategem" [ENT]
