Appearance:
The Denobulans have a series of ridges on their foreheads, temples, and
chins.
[All Enterprise episodes]
Denobulans have quite flexible facial features and
can smile very widely.
"Broken Bow" [ENT], "A Night in Sickbay" [ENT], "Stigma" [ENT]
Physiology:
Hibernation: Denobulans require little rest
except for an annual hibernation cycle (which normally lasts
six
days).
"Dear Doctor" [ENT]
The hibernation period can be made shorter using
medication.
"Two Days and Two Nights" [ENT]
Instinctive Defensive Response: Denobulans will puff up
their face and head area to a very large size
as an instinctive defensive response.
"Home" [ENT]
Lifespan: Denobulans live a long time.
"A Night in Sickbay" [ENT]
Since Phlox's grandmother remembers a war that took place 300 years ago, one can
estimate that a
Denobulan generation is around 100 years.
"The Breach" [ENT]
Homeworld:
Denobula Triaxa. "Breaking the Ice"
[ENT]
Flora and Fauna: When asked about
pets, Phlox mentions that the "Denobulan Lemur" is "highly
sought-after." "It has a tail, fur; most have
one head." But Denobulans don't keep pets. The
Denobulan Lemur is "much sought after" because its
kidneys are considered a delicacy.
"A Night in Sickbay" [ENT]
Places of Interest:
Kaybin bars - The part of the city (of
whatever city Dr.Lucas worked in) is known for its very lively
Kaybin bars along the river, which, if Dr. Phlox, is
recalling it correctly, stay open all night. One
should not venture into them unescorted since what
goes on there can be quite disturbing to the
uninitiated.
"Doctor's Orders" [ENT]
Culture:
[ Accepted Social Behavior ][ Mating ][ Death ][ Language ][ Institutions
]
Accepted Social
Behavior:
Conversation during a meal is considered to be a
waste of time.
"Fight or Flight" [ENT]
Denobulans don't like to be touched.
Denobulans had something similar to movies "a few
hundred years ago", but they went out of fashion
when people realized their
own lives were more interesting.
"Dear Doctor" [ENT]
Denobulans are gregarious, have crowded cities by
choice, and dislike isolation.
"Doctor's Orders" [ENT]
On Denobula, when a person under stress
hallucinates, it's considered healthy-- a harmless way for
the subconscious to release nervous energy.
"Exile" [ENT]
Mating:
Denobulan reproduction is quite complicated, making human reproduction
look like that
of single celled organisms (in Dr. Lucas'
opinion). The mating season can be very trying (for
bystanders at least, and possibly for the
participants as well); a dose of the drug niaxilin can be quite
effective in separating the combatants. A
married man has three simultaneous wives, each of which
has three husbands (unclear if these are the same
three, ie 3+3, or a wider net). The phermones
of Denobulan females are more potent than that of
their human counterparts making it much easier
for the Denobulan male to tell if a female is
interested in him.
"Dear Doctor" [ENT]
Two people may constitute a Denobulan marriage, but
not a "proper" one.
"Doctor's Orders" [ENT]
When greeting they smell each
other. "Stigma" [ENT]
Denobulans are renowned for their patience and can
go for years without seeing their mates.
"Stigma" [ENT]
Denobulan males are far more inhibited than
Denobulan females.
"Bounty" [ENT]
Death:
Denobulans take great pleasure in bequeathing
their belongings to far-flung relatives.
"Zero Hour" [ENT]
Language:
When Phlox is coaching Hoshi in how to speak Denobulan, he mentions
their next
lesson will be on gerunds.
Sato confuses the words for "nostril"/"fruit", and
"washboard"/"couple (of people)".
"Dear Doctor" [ENT]
Institutions:
Denobulan Science Academy - This organization
contacted Dr. Phlox to see if he could do something to
retreive three geologists from Xantoras when the
government there became hostile to off-worlders.
"The Breach" [ENT]
History:
ca 1853: The Denobulans and
Antarans fought several (presumably interstellar) wars, the most
recent was 300 years ago
(ca. 1853). Much animosity still exists between the two species.
"The Breach" [ENT]
ca 1900: The Denobulans start using genetic engineering
to generally positive effect. (they've been
using it for over 2 centuries as of 2154.)

Bogga - male. Kessil's 3rd
husband. "Stigma" [ENT]
Feezal Phlox (Melinda Page Hamilton) - Dr. Phlox's second
wife. She is an expert in quantum optics and
invented the neutron microscope installed in
Enterprise's sickbay in late 2152. Before this, she and
Phlox hadn't seen each other for nearly four
years. She immediately took a liking to Tucker.
"Stigma" [ENT]
Forlisa - female. Klaban's wife - Feezal thinks she was
his first wife. Phlox once considered asking Forlisa
to be his second wife, then discovered she already
had three husbands.
"Stigma" [ENT]
Groznik - male. He's down to one wife because Kessil
moved to "Teerza Prime" to be with her third husband.
"Stigma" [ENT]
He is Phlox's first wife's third husband. When
Phlox was making his will, he said Groznick could keep
the Aldebaran drum set that he had loaned him.
They have a female child named Indaura. 8 or 9 years
old by
2154.
"Zero Hour" [ENT]
Indaura - female. Child of Groznick and Phlox's first
wife. She is 8 or 9 years old as of 2154. Phlox
left her his botanical library since she always had
a flair for plants.
"Zero Hour" [ENT]
Kessil - female. Was married to Groznik but moved to
Teerza Prime to be with her 3rd husband, Bogga.
